We sit down with Dr Angelos Amditis, Research & Development Director of ICCS/NTUA and CHORUS project coordinator, together with Christos Ballis and Georgios Zacharopoulos from the coordination team, to talk about the project, their role in CHORUS, and the impact they hope it will have.
1. Can you introduce your organisation?
Can you tell us about your organisation, its mission, and the expertise it brings to CHORUS?
The I-SENSE Group, founded in 2002, is one of the most dynamic research units of the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), employing over 150 researchers. It conducts cutting-edge interdisciplinary research across 10 thematic divisions, including Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM), Smart Mobility Applied Systems, Circular Economy, Intelligent Networks, Health Technologies, and more. Committed to creating societal and economic impact, I-SENSE actively supports research exploitation and has contributed to the creation of two successful spin-offs.
2. Why did your organisation join CHORUS?
What motivated I-SENSE Group to join the consortium, and what is its role within the project?
- As a leading European research group in Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM), I-SENSE Group was motivated to coordinate CHORUS because it aligns with our mission to develop safer, smarter, and more sustainable transport systems. The project provides an opportunity to combine our extensive expertise in coordinating EU funded projects with our knowledge in CCAM.
- I-SENSE Group of ICCS serves as the coordinator of CHORUS, overseeing the project’s technical, administrative, and financial management while ensuring effective collaboration among the 36 consortium partners. Beyond coordination, I-SENSE leads the Trikala pilot, contributes across all work packages, leading the development, integration, and validation of innovative CCAM solutions, and supporting pilot demonstrations in seven European sites and the project’s overall impact.
3. Which CHORUS outcome are you most excited about?
Is there a particular tool, pilot, methodology, or result that you’re especially looking forward to, and why?
As Project Coordinator and lead of the Trikala pilot, ICCS is looking forward to deploying and coordinating a holistic urban mobility ecosystem across two key Use Cases: deploying automated logistics robots integrated with postal services for safe off-street navigation, and orchestrating heterogeneous traffic actors through a centralized Traffic Management Centre.
4. What impact do you hope CHORUS will have on citizens?
Which aspects of the project do you think will make the biggest difference in people’s everyday lives?
The greatest benefit of CHORUS lies in its citizen-centred approach to Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility. By enabling safer interactions between automated and conventional vehicles, improving traffic efficiency, and supporting more sustainable transport, CHORUS addresses challenges that directly affect people’s daily lives.
